Number lines are the simplest maths tool and also the most effective. A long straight line with numbered points is enough to teach counting, addition, subtraction, comparison, and even an intuitive grasp of negative numbers. Kids who use number lines in Grade 1 get better at mental arithmetic in Grade 3 โ€” there's solid research on this โ€” and the reason is that the line gives them a spatial model for what numbers actually are.

This printable has four number lines on separate pages: 0 to 20 (for Kindergarten and early Grade 1), 0 to 100 (for Grade 2 and 3), -10 to 10 (for introducing negative numbers), and a blank number line where kids can label their own. Print and tape to the wall, or stick on a desk pad for homework time.

Best use: physically move a finger or counter along the line during addition and subtraction problems. 7 plus 5 becomes 'start at 7, jump 5 spaces'. This physical action builds the mental model better than pure memorisation. Everything free, classroom-safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What number ranges are included?+

Four versions: 0 to 20, 0 to 100, -10 to 10, and a blank customisable version.

What age is the number line for?+

Kindergarten to Grade 4. Kindergarten uses 0 to 20; Grade 3 and 4 use the 100 and negative-number versions.

Can I use this for negative numbers?+

Yes โ€” the -10 to 10 version is designed specifically to introduce the concept of negative numbers visually.

How does this compare to a hundreds chart?+

Number lines show numbers as a single sequence (good for counting, addition). Hundreds charts show numbers as a 10ร—10 grid (good for patterns and place value). Both are useful, for different things.
