Number writing is one of the earliest pencil-and-paper skills kids learn, and it's surprisingly tricky. Each digit has its own stroke order โ€” some start at the top, some at the bottom, some loop, some don't โ€” and getting the stroke order right in the first year saves years of messy handwriting later.

This printable covers 1 to 20, one number per sheet, with directional arrows showing where each stroke starts and which way it goes. Each sheet includes a demonstration, several dotted traces, and blank practice space. Work through the numbers in order, or skip around based on which ones your child finds hardest (3, 5 and 8 are the usual stumbling blocks).

Short daily sessions beat long occasional ones. Five minutes a day for a month will take most preschoolers from 'can't write numbers' to 'writes all numbers to 20'. Pair with our counting worksheets for the conceptual side. Everything free, no signup.

Around age 3 to 4 once they can hold a pencil reasonably. By end of Kindergarten most children should write 1 to 20 independently.

Yes โ€” every number has clear directional arrows showing starting points and stroke direction.

Do these go past 20?+

This printable covers 1 to 20. For older children, our standard maths worksheets cover writing larger numbers in context.
