Number flashcards are the maths equivalent of alphabet flashcards โ€” flash the card, the child says the number, move on. The twist is that early number cards work best when they have two pieces of information: the numeral (3) and the quantity (three dots). Children need to connect the symbol to the real thing, and a card with only a numeral doesn't give them the connection.

This printable has flashcards for 1 to 20 in two styles: numeral with dot pattern (for building quantity sense) and numeral alone (for older kids who already know the quantities). Eight cards per sheet, print on cardstock, cut on the dotted lines. Laminate for durability.

Start with 1 to 10 at age 3, add 11 to 20 at age 4 to 5 once the first set is solid. Use with our Counting Stars game and counting worksheets for full coverage. Everything free, instant PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should kids learn numbers 1 to 20?+

1 to 10 by age 3 to 4 is a common goal. 11 to 20 by age 5. By the end of Kindergarten, most children should recognise and name all numbers to 20 reliably.

Why dot patterns on the cards?+

The dot pattern connects the numeral to the actual quantity, which is how number sense develops. Numeral-only cards skip this step and are less effective for the youngest learners.

How many cards per sheet?+

8 cards per A4 or Letter sheet. The full 1 to 20 set prints on 3 sheets.

Is this free to print?+

Yes. Free PDF, no signup, print as many as you need.
