Sight word flashcards are the best tool for the hardest part of early reading. Sight words can't be sounded out (try phonetically decoding 'the' — you can't), so children have to simply memorise them. Flashcards are how that memorisation happens efficiently. Five minutes a day, 10 cards at a time, and most kids have the Kindergarten sight word list memorised in a few weeks.
This printable covers the full Dolch sight word list (220 words) split into Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels. 8 cards per sheet, large clear text, plenty of white space. Print on cardstock, laminate if you're going to use them daily, and keep them in a small container near where you usually do bedtime reading.
