Grade 3 Subtraction Worksheets — Free Printable PDF
Free Grade 3 subtraction worksheets — multi-digit subtraction within 1000, borrowing across zeros, word problems. Common Core 3.NBT aligned.
The hardest subtraction technique a Grade 3 child meets is borrowing across a zero. When you have to subtract from 503, the borrowing chain ripples through two columns: the tens are zero, so you can't just borrow ten — you have to first borrow a hundred to make the tens column ten, THEN borrow ten from the tens. It's the only multi-step manoeuvre in early arithmetic and it's where many Grade 3 kids stall.
Our Grade 3 subtraction sheets dedicate several pages to borrowing across zeros, with the first sheet showing each step and later sheets removing the scaffolding. Pure three-digit subtraction within 1000 is covered, along with two-step word problems and 'find the missing number' equations like 503 − ? = 247.
Don't rush this. A Grade 3 child who can borrow across a zero confidently is ready for everything Grade 4 will throw at them. Pair with our Subtraction Quest game. Free, copy-friendly.
