Borrowing is the make-or-break moment of Grade 2 maths. The first time a child has to subtract 7 from 4 in the ones column, it feels impossible — and the technique of crossing out the tens digit, replacing it with one less, and adding ten to the ones column is genuinely abstract. There's no trick. The fix is to do it ten times in a row until it feels normal.

Our Grade 2 subtraction sheets give exactly those reps. They start with two-digit subtraction without borrowing (the warm-up), then move to two-digit with borrowing in the ones column, then borrowing across both columns, then three-digit subtraction. Word problems appear throughout, drawn from the four standard Grade 2 problem types: take away, compare, missing addend, two-step.

Don't skip the no-borrowing warm-up — it builds confidence before the harder concept arrives. Pair with our Subtraction Quest game. Free, copy-friendly, no signup wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is borrowing?+

When the top number in a subtraction column is smaller than the bottom number, you 'borrow' 10 from the next column to the left. Now called 'regrouping' in modern curriculums.

Why is borrowing so hard?+

It involves multiple steps — cross out, write smaller number, add 10, then subtract — and the child has to track all of them at once. Practice is the only fix.

Should Grade 2 do three-digit subtraction?+

Yes — 2.NBT.B.7 expects subtraction within 1000 by year-end. Three-digit problems are required.

Are word problems included?+

Yes. Multiple word problem sheets covering all four 2.OA.A.1 problem types.
