Grade 2 shape work introduces precise vocabulary. A child who used to call everything four-sided a 'square' now learns rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid and the umbrella term quadrilateral. Polygon enters the vocabulary too. The geometric world goes from a handful of shapes to a categorisation system, and that's the actual skill being taught.

Our Grade 2 shape sheets cover 2.G.A.1 (recognising and drawing shapes by attributes), 2.G.A.2 (partitioning rectangles into equal squares — the array model), and 2.G.A.3 (partitioning shapes into halves, thirds and fourths). The partitioning sheets are technically the second-year fractions foundation, leading directly into Grade 3 fractions.

These pair well with our Shape Sorter game for vocabulary review. Free to print, free for class, no signup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a quadrilateral?+

Any closed four-sided shape. Squares, rectangles, rhombuses and trapezoids are all quadrilaterals.

Why partition shapes into thirds?+

It's the foundation of fractions. Once a child can partition a shape into three equal pieces, they understand 1/3 conceptually before they meet the symbol.

What's an array in shape work?+

A rectangle divided into rows and columns of equal squares. Counting the squares previews multiplication (3 rows × 4 columns = 12 squares).

Common Core aligned?+

Yes — the sheets cover all 2.G.A standards (2.G.A.1, 2.G.A.2 and 2.G.A.3).
