Grade 1 Shapes Worksheets — Free Printable PDF
Free Grade 1 shapes worksheets — defining attributes, composing shapes, halves and fourths. Common Core 1.G aligned. Instant PDF download.
Grade 1 shape work is where geometry stops being about naming and starts being about reasoning. A child has to figure out which features of a shape matter (number of sides, closed figure) and which don't (colour, size, orientation). That distinction — defining versus non-defining attributes — is the cornerstone of all later geometry.
Our Grade 1 shape sheets cover the 1.G standards: identifying defining attributes, composing 2D shapes from smaller pieces (two triangles make a square), composing 3D shapes from smaller solids, and the first introduction to fractions through halves and fourths of shapes. The 'partition into equal shares' sheets are technically the start of fractions work.
These pair well with our Shape Sorter game and printable pattern-block activities. Use them in any order — Grade 1 shape work doesn't have a strict sequence. Free to print, free for class.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are defining attributes?+
Features that determine what a shape IS (number of sides, closed figure). Non-defining attributes are colour, size and orientation.
Do these include fractions?+
Yes — the partition sheets cover halves and fourths of shapes, which is Common Core 1.G.A.3 and the first taste of fractions.
What does 'compose shapes' mean?+
Combining shapes to make a bigger or new shape — for example, four triangles forming a square, or two semicircles forming a circle.
Are these too easy for advanced first graders?+
If your child finishes these quickly, jump to Grade 2 shapes which add quadrilaterals and more partitioning work.
