Grade 2 doesn't formally teach multiplication — that's a Grade 3 standard. But Common Core 2.OA.C.4 explicitly asks Grade 2 students to use repeated addition to find the total of objects in equal-sized groups. That's the foundation. A child who really gets 'four groups of three is twelve' through repeated addition will sail through Grade 3 multiplication later.

Our Grade 2 multiplication sheets focus on this bridge. Pages start with arrays — pictures of objects in rows and columns — and the child writes both the addition expression (3+3+3+3) and the resulting total. Later sheets switch to the multiplication symbol (×) and ask the child to interpret 4×3 as 'four groups of three.' We hold off on memorising the times tables until Grade 3, where it belongs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should Grade 2 know multiplication facts?+

No. Memorising times tables is a Grade 3 standard. Grade 2 just builds the conceptual foundation through repeated addition and arrays.

What's an array in maths?+

A grid arrangement of objects in equal rows and columns — for example, a 3×4 array has 3 rows of 4 objects each. Arrays are the visual model for multiplication.

Are these too advanced for early Grade 2?+

Use them in the second half of Grade 2, after addition and subtraction within 100 are solid. Early Grade 2 should focus on addition and place value first.

Do these prepare for Grade 3?+

Yes — that's their main purpose. A child who masters arrays and repeated addition in Grade 2 finds Grade 3 times tables much easier.
