Free Reading Comprehension Worksheets — Printable PDF
Free printable reading comprehension worksheets — short passages with questions. Grade 1 to Grade 4. Fiction and non-fiction. No signup required.
Reading comprehension is the skill that separates kids who 'can read' from kids who can actually learn from reading. A Grade 2 child can decode every word in a paragraph about penguins and still have no idea what the paragraph said — because decoding and understanding are two different skills, and schools often teach the first much harder than the second.
The worksheets on this page are short passages (100 to 300 words) with a mix of question types: literal ('what colour was the dog?'), inferential ('why was Sam upset?'), and vocabulary ('what does enormous mean here?'). Passages are split by grade level, with fiction and non-fiction variety, and each one takes 10 to 15 minutes end-to-end — short enough to fit into a daily routine, long enough to actually build the skill.
One warning: reading comprehension improves most from reading volume, not from worksheets. These sheets are the icing, not the cake. Pair them with daily reading of real books at the child's level for the best results. Everything is free, print-ready, and safe for classroom use.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I improve my child's reading comprehension?+
Daily reading of real books at their level, followed by brief 'what just happened?' conversations. Worksheets add focused practice on specific question types. Volume matters more than worksheet count.
What grade level are the passages?+
We split by Grade 1 (very short, high-picture), Grade 2 (100 to 150 words), Grade 3 (150 to 250 words), and Grade 4 (250 to 350 words).
Do you include non-fiction reading?+
Yes — roughly half the passages are non-fiction on topics like animals, space, history and science. Non-fiction vocabulary is a specific reading skill that benefits from dedicated practice.
Are answer keys included?+
Yes. Every worksheet has an answer key printed on the back or as a separate page for easy marking.
