Preschool Tracing Worksheets — Free Printable PDF
Free preschool tracing worksheets — trace lines, curves, shapes, letters and numbers. Builds fine motor control for ages 3–5. Instant PDF download.
Before a child can write a letter, the hand has to learn the movements: down strokes, curves, circles, zigzags. Pre-writing tracing is the foundation everything else sits on, and you can't skip it. The kids who struggle with handwriting in Grade 1 are almost always the ones who didn't get enough tracing practice at age 3 and 4.
These worksheets cover the full pre-writing progression — straight lines, curves, loops, then shapes, then letter outlines. The earliest sheets are giant, thick dotted lines a toddler can follow with a chunky crayon. Later sheets shrink the size and add directional arrows so the child learns the correct stroke order.
Use one tracing sheet per session, give a thick triangular pencil or crayon, and don't worry about neatness — the goal at this age is the movement, not the result. Combine with our Preschool Tracing collection for more variety.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the right age to start tracing?+
Most children are ready for line tracing at age 3, shapes at 3–4, and letters at 4–5. Follow your child's grip strength rather than age.
What kind of pencil should they use?+
A triangular grip pencil or chunky crayon is best. Standard pencils are usually too thin for a preschooler's grip.
Should I correct them if they trace messily?+
No. At this stage you're building motor patterns. Neatness comes later. Praise effort and stop while it's still fun.
How many tracing sheets per week?+
Two or three short sessions a week is plenty. Daily is fine if the child enjoys it but never force it.
