Grade 5 Fractions Worksheets — Free Printable PDF
Free Grade 5 fractions worksheets — unlike denominators, fraction multiplication, fraction division. Common Core 5.NF aligned.
Grade 5 is the heaviest fraction year of elementary school. Adding and subtracting fractions with UNLIKE denominators starts here, which means finding common denominators on every problem. Multiplying fractions arrives, with all of its strange consequences (multiplying by a fraction less than 1 makes the answer SMALLER). Dividing fractions enters at the end of the year, complete with the 'invert and multiply' rule that no child finds intuitive.
Our Grade 5 fraction sheets cover the entire 5.NF progression: adding and subtracting unlike fractions (5.NF.A.1), multiplying fractions by whole numbers and other fractions (5.NF.B.4), interpreting fraction multiplication as scaling (5.NF.B.5), and dividing unit fractions by whole numbers and vice versa (5.NF.B.7). Word problem sheets test all four operations with fractions in real contexts.
Pair with Fractions Frenzy for game-based practice. Grade 5 fraction work is the foundation for Grade 6 ratios and Grade 7 proportions — getting it solid here pays dividends for years. Free, no signup.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the trick for unlike denominators?+
Find a common denominator (often the least common multiple of the two denominators), rewrite both fractions, then add or subtract the numerators.
Why does multiplying make a fraction smaller?+
Because multiplying by a number less than 1 means taking a fractional PART of something. 1/2 of 1/3 is smaller than 1/3 — that's exactly what 1/2 × 1/3 = 1/6 means.
What's 'invert and multiply'?+
To divide by a fraction, flip it upside down and multiply. 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 2. The flipped version is called the reciprocal.
Is 5.NF the hardest Common Core standard?+
Many teachers say so. Fraction multiplication and division are conceptually demanding even for kids who are fluent with whole-number arithmetic.
