Cursive is making a quiet comeback. After a decade where most US schools dropped it entirely, there's been a shift back to teaching it from Grade 2 or 3, partly because of research showing cursive writing uses different parts of the brain than print and print-only kids miss out on some cognitive benefits. Whatever the reason, if your child is learning cursive, they need practice sheets.

This printable covers the full cursive alphabet in D'Nealian style, which is the most common cursive taught in US and UK schools. Four sheet types: uppercase traces with directional arrows, lowercase traces, letter-joining exercises (how 'a' connects to 'b'), and word-practice sheets for common words. Each sheet has lined paper sized for primary students (larger lines than adult paper).

Cursive is best taught in short daily sessions. 10 minutes a day for a few weeks will take a child from 'knows the letters in print' to 'can write a sentence in cursive'. Pair with our print letter tracing worksheets if your child is also still building print handwriting. Everything free.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is cursive typically taught?+

Grade 2 to 4 in most US schools that teach it. UK and international curricula vary — some introduce joined handwriting from Year 1, others stay with print through Year 3.

Which cursive style is this?+

D'Nealian style, which is the most common modern cursive taught in English-speaking schools. It's a simplified form that flows naturally from print handwriting.

Should kids learn print or cursive first?+

Almost always print first, because it's what books are printed in and kids learn to read print letters first. Cursive comes after print is solid, usually in Grade 2 or 3.

Are these worksheets really free?+

Yes — all JiggyJoy printables are free to download and print, including cursive. No signup, no email required.
