How to Teach Toddlers to Share (Without Forcing It)
Forced sharing doesn't work. Here's what actually builds generous kids: taking turns with a timer, protecting their current toy, and modelling.
The usual toddler sharing advice is nonsense. A two-year-old does not possess the cognitive machinery to voluntarily surrender a toy โ and forcing them to do so teaches them that whoever grabs loudest wins. What actually works is surprisingly different and surprisingly gentle.
The technique: protect the current owner. If a toddler is playing with a toy and another child wants it, the second child waits. Use a visible timer โ 2 minutes, 5 minutes โ and when it goes off, the first child willingly hands over the toy because they know it's coming back. This is the turn-taking model and it is how nurseries that don't have daily meltdowns handle it.
Sharing voluntarily โ the kind where a four-year-old gives half their biscuit to a friend โ develops around age 3 to 5 and cannot be forced. It arrives through modelling (watching you share), stories about sharing, and enough secure experiences of being the owner. Rush it and you delay it.
