How to Teach Paragraph Writing

A paragraph is a topic sentence plus supporting sentences. Teach it with that structure and writing quality jumps overnight.

Paragraph writing is where primary literacy stops being about mechanics and starts being about organisation. A child who can write good sentences doesn't automatically write good paragraphs — they have to be taught that a paragraph has a shape: topic sentence, two or three supporting sentences, and a closing sentence if needed. That shape is the whole skill.

The teaching sequence: model a paragraph out loud, identify the topic sentence, identify the supporting sentences, then ask the child to write one the same shape on a different topic. Do that five times across a week and they'll start producing structured paragraphs on their own. Without the explicit structure teaching, kids write paragraphs that wander.

The topic sentence is the piece to drill. Every paragraph needs one sentence that tells the reader what the paragraph is about. A child who can identify topic sentences in their reading will start writing them in their own work, and that single habit lifts paragraph quality more than any other intervention.
