How to Teach Kindergarten Math at Home

A complete kindergarten math curriculum scope: counting, number recognition, shapes, patterns, and simple addition. Build it in order, week by week.

Kindergarten maths is not "maths lite" — it's the scaffolding for everything that follows, and if it's built wrong, every subsequent year is harder. The good news: the actual content is small. Counting to 20, recognising numerals 0 to 10, a handful of shapes, simple patterns, addition and subtraction within 5. That's almost the whole year.

The order that works: number recognition, counting, one-to-one correspondence, cardinality, then shapes and patterns running alongside, then addition and subtraction within 5 in the final term. Each stage should be secure before moving on — rushing produces the kids who "can do it" on the worksheet but fall apart in Year 1.

Below are the worksheets and games we use most in home practice. Fifteen minutes daily across all topics beats a 45-minute session once a week. The secret of kindergarten maths is consistency, not intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a kindergartener need to know in maths?+

Count to 20, recognise numerals 0 to 10, name basic 2D and 3D shapes, copy and extend simple patterns, add and subtract within 5, and understand concepts of more, less, and equal.

How much maths practice per day for a kindergartener?+

10 to 15 minutes of focused practice is plenty, ideally split into two short sessions. Consistency beats duration at this age.

Should I use worksheets or manipulatives?+

Both. Manipulatives (counters, blocks, buttons) build the concept; worksheets consolidate and give practice. Pure worksheet-only teaching at this age doesn't transfer well.

What if my child is behind in kindergarten maths?+

Go back to the previous stage and rebuild. 'Behind' at 5 usually just means a foundational skill was rushed. Fifteen minutes daily on the missing piece usually closes the gap in weeks.
